STAFF REPORT
SARASOTA –– Streets in downtown Sarasota will close again to help local merchants trying to survive the economic downturn from the COVID-19 pandemic.
City Manager Tom Barwin made the announcement early Friday afternoon with the closures beginning at 3:30 p.m. and ending at midnight. The closures will repeat on Saturday from 3:30 p.m. to midnight.
Affected streets are:
- Main Street from Palm Avenue to Mira Mar Court
- State Street from the State Street Garage to Lemon Avenue
- Lemon Avenue from Main Street to just north of State Street
Barwin indicated the closures will likely remain in place from 3:30 p.m. to midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday throughout June.
The City is working with downtown merchants to determine interest in this experimental economic recovery program and possible expansion to other business districts. Affected street blocks may vary week to week based on input and interest from business owners.
Those interested in being involved with this experimental endeavor are encouraged to email [email protected].
