SARASOTA –– With a lot of uncertainty over what’s essential and what’s not essential, Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight has a suggestion for local businesses.
Taking to Twitter Thursday morning, the sheriff suggested that local businesses have their attorneys draft a document that employees could carry on themselves or in their vehicles to explain why they were out and about.
“It’ll reduce the anxiety for that employee and help educate the deputy, too,” Knight explained.
On Wednesday, Gov. Ron DeSantis finally issued a state-wide stay-at-home order for Floridians, but allowing a variety of essential businesses to remain open. That list, promulgated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and further enhanced by Miami-Dade County, includes a broad swath of categories deemed essential.
But within those categories, what is essential and what is nonessential has raised questions for local businesses.
“There’s a lot of things that need to continue for our society,” Knight said in an interview on Fox 13 about his suggestion.
In his tweet, Knight went on to say, “We will not conduct traffic stops nor create checkpoints of any kind. Our approach is education before enforcement.”
Education before enforcement has been a hallmark of Knight’s tenure as sheriff.
